Kéunion de deux Cheminées tirées de l'œuvre de J. Berain
(p. 197). Celle de droite, placée au premier plan, paraît desti-
née à la décoration d'une Galerie ou Salle d'Apparat. Elle se
compose d'un entablement supporté par deux pilastres ioniques
réunis par un médaillon de peinture à cadre orné d'agrafes.
L'rmortissement du haut rappelle le manteau de cheminée (p.
188) dont l'usage dans les grands appartements se perdit à la
fin du xvic siècle.
Dans la cheminée de gauche, projetée pour la chambre à cou-
cher de quelque favorite, l'artiste a mis en œuvre toutes les
pompes de la coquetterie empesée du « grand siècle. » Au pied
d'une arcade foimant niche, sous un baldaquin orné de guir-
landes et accompagnant un groupe de sculpture (Vénus et
l'Amour), s'ajuste une glace à cadre chantourné, premier et ti-
mide essai de l'application aux décorations intérieures de cette
industrie que Colbert venait de créer en France. — Les pan-
neaux de fond sont, dans les deux compositions, ornés de s(mis
en dorure. L'ornementation des contre-catirs en fonte (pp. 23,
118) est d'une grande recherche. — Gravure de Daigremont.

Reunion of two Chitnneys taken Irom the work of/. Berain
(p. 197). The one on the right, given in the first, plan, seems
destined to be the décoration on a Gallery or State-room. It
iscomposed of an entablature supportedby twolonic pilasters,
united by a round painted modillion with a border ornamented
with clasps. The finishment of the upper part recalls to mind
the mantel-piece (p. 188) the usage of which in large appart-
ments disappeared at the end ol the xvill> century.
In thechimney on the left, intended for the bed-room oî some
favorite, the artist has put in exécution ail the pomps of the
formai coquetry of the "great century". At the foot of an ar-
cade forming a niche, unaer a canopy adorned with garlands,
and accompanying a group of sculpture (Venus and Cupid), is
adjusted a looking-glass in a frame eut in profil, first and timid
attempt at applying to interior décorations that ingenuity which
Colbert had just given birth in France. — The panels of the
back-ground are in both compositions ornamented in gilt seed-
plats. The décoration of the cast bachs of the chimneys (pp.
23, 118) is of great research. — Engraving by Daigremont.—
