XVIIe SIÈCLE. — ÉCOLE française. MONUMENT FUNÉRAIRE DE CLAUDE PERRAULT.
(AU MUSÉE DE CLUNY, A PARIS.)
Le monument funéraire de l’architecte de la colonnade du Louvre se voyait jadis dans
l’église Saint-Benoît, réédifiée au xvn' siècle. L’inscription en marbre a été enlevée, ainsi que
l’écusson du fronton et le cartouche de la base. De chaque côté, on voit des génies debout, por-
tant l’un l’équerre, et l’autre le compas, attributs de l’architecture. Ces génies tiennent en
outre une torche renversée, image de la mort. Ce petit monument est non seulement très bien
conçu, mais il est aussi très bien exécuté.
Nous montrons (fig. 5148) un détail de la moulure ornée qui encadrait l’inscription aujour-
d’hui disparue.

The funeral monument of the architect of the “ colonnade du Louvre ” was of old in the
church of S. Benedict, which was rebuilt during the xvii1'1 century. The inscription as well
as the escutcheon of the pediment and the cartouche of the base hâve been obliterated. On
each side are genii holding in one hand, the first a compass, the second a square; the emblems
of architecture, and in their other hand a reverted torch, Symbol of death. This small monu-
ment is not only well designed but also cleverly executed. Fig. 5148 represents on an enlarged
scale part of the ornamental moulding framing the inscription now defaced.
