La galerie d’Apollon, au Louvre, laisse voir dans une de ses vitrines centrales ce remar-
quable plateau, sorte de bassin couvert en son entier d’émaux champlevés du meilleur goût. La
plupart de ces bassins de nos musées ou collections particulières ont dû appartenir à des
seigneurs et servir à verser l’eau qui, au moment de la toilette ou avant et après les repas,

purifiait leurs mains. Le plateau ci-dessous montre, en effet, près de l’un des bords, des petits
trous percés en circonférence et qui en indiquent clairement l’usage. Ces bassins de purifi-
cation et privés d’aiguières vont généralement par paires, ainsi que le prouvent les anciens
textes. La coupe est indiquée figure 5146.

One of the central show cases of the Apollo Gallery at the Louvre contains a copper
basin entirely coated with chanlevè enamels of capital taste. The greatest number of the basins
of this kind which are to be seen in public and private collections belonged probably to nobles,
and were used for sprinkling water upon their hands hefore and after the repast, so as to
cleanse them. In fact, the small circulai- holes pierced a little below the rim, on one of the
sides, shows the use the basin was intended for; and the coat of arms semé with fleurs de lis
upon the convex centre of the article proves aso its domestic origin. The ancient texts equally
prove that these basins always went by pairs. Fig. 5146 gives the section of the article.
