The Project

This website is a result of the Collaborative Research Centre 933 'Material Text Cultures' sub-project A02, 'Ancient Letters as Means of Communication', which ran between 2011 and 2023 at the University of Heidelberg. In the years 2011-2019, a database of ancient letters was created under the auspices of Dr. Antonia Sarri (Athens) and Dr. Fatma Hamouda (Mansoura). In the final phase of the project in 2019-2023, that database was enhanced with information related to Coptic letters by Dr. Loreleï Vanderheydem, and transformed into an XML-Database that has now been published on this website.
