tested. Only on this basis can the damaging fluctuations in
chmate and the associated deterioration processes (conden-
sation formation, transport of salts and weathering due to
salts, through cyclic changes of humid and dry conditions)
be permanently restricted and slowed down.

Potential and prospects of Conservation/
restoration
Regardless ofwhich variant ofthe cloister’s future presenta-
tion is decided on, prior Conservation of the historical sub-
stance is required, including that which is characteristic in
the present appearance ofthe architectural structures, name-
ly the polychrome painting carried out by C. W. Hase. The
pilot study inyoke 7 is the firstphase in carrying out the con-
servation-restoration ofthe cloister. The techniques and aes-
thetics ofthe Conservation work and also the objectives ofthe
monument’s maintenance, are being developed in detail in
the pilot study. The fluctuations in climate, which under the
present conditions have lead to dramatically increased

weathering, must be reduced as far as possible, so that the
cloister receives a lasting preservation perspective through
normal maintenance. The precondition for this is the con-
struction ofa permanent protective shelter. From a Conser-
vation point ofview, totally covering the cloister is, in accor-
dance with the temporary structure, preferable to covering
the inner area only.

Future measures — protective enciosure, maintenance
and care
The scientific results which are now available point the way
towards a sustainable preservation of the cloister and the
necessary measures of conservation/restoration. Ejforts to pre-
serve the substance are offoremost importance, while restora-
tions, for example reconstructions of original polychrome
painting, have to bepostponedforfinancial reasons. Fürther,
the examination results show that in the long term, the clois-
ter can only be saved within a protective enciosure. In the
face ofthe exceptional value ofthe architectural monument,
this enciosure will have to be transparent and of high quali-
ty. Additionally, regulär maintenance ofthe cloister by con-
servators-restorers is an indispensable part ofthe preservation
concept.
