Nel quale si tratta de legnami. Che
non si deliba, cominciare uri Edi-
sicio a caso, ma bisogni avere
molto tempo prima immaginato e
rivolto per l animo, qnal debba
riusc'ire. E che si debba conside-
rar bene ed efami tiare col parere
d'uomini intelligenti, tutto l'Edi-
sicio, e eia/cuna proporzione e
mi sura di qualunque parte dì
quello, non sollmente con averlo
dìsegnato o dipinto, ma con averne
satti modelli di afsé o di qualche
altra cofa, acciocché poi non ci
penta di quel che avrà satto.

| O non penso che le opere e le
spese de gli Edificj si debbano
cominciale a calo ; sì per molte
altre cagioni, sì ancora perchè
il farlo nuocerebbe ed alla
riputazione. Perciocché lìc-
come un' opera bene e compiutamente fatta
arreca lode a tutti coloro che anno posto in
lei ogni loro Capere, fatica e itudio ; così an-
cora sé vi sarà colu alcuna nella quale tu desìde-
ralìi die l'Autore avelie avuto in conto alcuno
alquanto più arte o sapere, nuocerà molto alla
sua lode e riputazione. E sono certamente ma-
niscste, e quasi clic in su gli occhj le lodi e i
difetti de gli Edificj, e mallìme de' pubblici ; ne'
quali (io non lo In clic modo) quello che v' è
{convenevole, tira gli uomini a disprcgiarlo piut-
tollo che quello che v' è di bello e ben fatto e
compiutamente sinito, non gli induca a mera-
viglia. Ed è certo cosa meravigliosi, perchè lia

no Man ought to begin a Building

or Paintings, but in atlual Models

%*£ Do not think the Labour and
■jJe Expence of a Building ought to
be enter'd upon in a hurry ; as
well for several other reasons,
as also because a Man's Honour
and Reputation suffers by it. For
as a Delign well arid compleatly finilhd brings
Praise to him that has cmploy'd his Pains and
Study in the Work ; so if in any particular the
Author seems to have been wanting, either of
Art or Prudence, it detracts very much from
that Praise, and from his Reputation. And in-
deed the Beauties or Faults of Edifices, cspccially
public ones, are in a manner clear and manilest
to every body ; and (I know not how it hap-
pens) any thing amils {boner draws Contempt,
than any thing handsome or well finilh'd docs
Commendation. It is really wonderful) how,
by a kind of natural Inllinct, all of us, knowing
or ignorant, immediately hit upon what is right
