bottoming is again found. The soil is, as always on Croy, a red,
sandy earth with a few small stones, and no large ones. All
through this, the layers are clear and consistent, although from
the falling away of the north face they cannot (except the
bottom line on the kerb) be traced all the way to the kerb line
on the north. On the south, they go to the face of the kerb and
stop there. Special notice was directed to them in this case, and
their characteristics observed at three different places—(1) on the
east side of the cutting near the middle of the vallum; (2) on the
inside or northern face of a transverse piece of the vallum which
(as at section Croy No. 11) was not cut through but left standing,
and (3) on the outside of that transverse piece—in other words,
on what there is every reason to believe to have been the original
exterior south face of the vallum above the south kerb.
At the first of these places the dark lines were found as under:—

There were traces of other layers between some of these, but
only those which are perfectly plain have been recorded. White,
sandy patches—in one case a long white-sandy layer, in another
a solid mass of the whitish clayey material—vary the regularity
of the red earth, especially as the south kerb is neared. More
will be said of this whitish clayey mass further on. In each
case these white layers and patches rest, like the red earth, on
and under black lines.
