The fosse here is 40 feet wide. There are numerous proofs here-
abouts that the scarp and counterscarp have at points been faced
with stone. Occasionally the top of the scarp and the top of the
counterscarp appear to have been each formed by a large stone.
One such lies on the top of the counterscarp nearly opposite this
section. The outer mound extends fully 80 feet north from the
counterscarp.
ROUGHCASTLE.—SECTION No. 2.
[Section of vallum only.]
The vallum here is 4 feet in height above the base. Its
kerhing and bottoming quite differ from previous types. On the
stone base, which measures 16 feet from outside face to outside
face, there is at each side a built-up core of stone about 2 feet
high. On the north this is 3 feet wide, and on the south 2 feet
6 inches, and in both cases it tapers as it rises, or at least appears
to have done so. It has not a squared face externally. Between
these two stone cores or structures the soil is marked by the
usual system of layering. The soil has the same appearance in
all respects as in the Bonnyside sections. There are 12 black
lines found at a point nearly midway between the two stone
cores:—
