XVr-XVir siècle. - École romaine vases

de POLIDORE F.r de LANFRANC

H nous a paru intéreffant de donneren parallèle des delfins
de Va/es de deux maîtres de l'École romaine, qui ont brillé
à un fiècle de diftance.

Polidore de Caravagc, fils d'artifan, né en 149b au bourg
de ce nom, dans le Milanais, fentit fa vocation éclater en fui-
vant les travaux des difciples de Raphael qui l'employaient à
leur porter le mortier dont ils avaient befoin pour la Pein-
ture à frefque. Après de férieufes études d'après l'Antique, il
fe voua à la grande Décoration. Il eut une part importante
dans l'exécution des Loges de Raphael qui l'avait admis au
nombre de (es élèves. Mort en 1D43. La plus grande partie
de fes ouvrages elf peinte à la frefque & à la détrempe. — Le
Vafe ci-deffus eft tiré de la décoration peinte de la façade du
palais de la Machefra d'Oro à Rome.

Le cavalier Jean Lanfranc, né à Parme, 1581, eut une vie
des plus heureufes, & mourut à Rome, en 1647, au fein de
fa famille, comblé de biens & d'honneurs. Le comte Scolti
l'avait fait fortir des pages pour développer fes aptitudes
fous Augvflin S- Annibal Carrache (p. 3) ; il étudia Raphael
& furtout le Corrige- La coupole de S. Andrea délia Valle
à Rome eft de lui. Ses frefques font plus eftimées que fes ta-
bleaux de chevalet. — Le vafe que nous donnons eft tiré de
fes décorations intérieures de la Villa Borghefe.

We have thought interefting to give at the lame time the
defigns of Vafes from two mafters of the Roman Schoo], who
lived at a century's dillance.

Polydorus Caravaggio, fon of a workman, was born in
1495, at a lmall Milanefe town bearing this name. His vo-
cation became determined while following the woorks of
Raphael'^ difciples, who ufed him to feeth the mortar they
needed for the Frefco painting. After having ferioufly ftudied
the Antique, he devoted himfelf to Decoration. A great part
of his maller Raphael's Loges were executed by him. He
died in the year 1545. Thegreateft portion of his woorks is
painted in frefco or diltemper. The vafe here above is taken
from the palace Mafchcra d'Oro's painted décoration of the
forefront in Rome.

The cavalier Giovanni Lanfranco, born in Parma (in i58i),
had a very happy life. His death took place during the year
1647, while furrounded by .his family, and overwhelmed
with richs and honours. Count Scotti had taken him out ol
the pages and placed him under Augußin and Annibal Car-
racci for the development of his artiftical difpofition (p. 3).
He ftudied Raphael and above all the Corregio. The cupola
of i>. Andrea della Valle in Rome counts among the moft
remarkable of his works. His frefcoes are held in higher
efteem than his eafel-paintings. The vafe which we give is
taken from his interior décorations of the Villa Borghefe.
