On peut dire sans aucune hésitation que l'objet ci-contre est
plus étrange que beau, et on peut ajouter qu'il est difficile de lui
assigner d'urîe façon absolue une date, ou môme une époque.
U n'offre, non plus, aucune parenté de décoration et d'exé-
cution avec la plupart des objets de même genre, et il devient
à peu près impossible de désigner le pays qui l'a fabriqué. —
Nous le croyons pourtant d'origine espagnole, mais datant de
deux époques bien distinctes.

Tout le travail d'orfèvrerie proprement dite, en cuivre doré
et d'une exécution soignée, peut être attribué à la fin du
xvie siècle, tandis que les cinq médaillons en buis sculpté, et
fixés dans la croix ou partie centrale du reliquaire, pourraient
remonter jusqu'à la fin du xnc siècle.
Le Christ en croix occupe la place d'honneur du reliquaire ;
deux saints évoques se voient à droite et à gauche, tandis qu'à
la base et au sommet sont deux apôtres, deux évangélistes.
Cinq cabochons, ou pierres précieuses, viennent jeter un cer-
tain éclat sur l'objet, en calmant un peu la profusion qui ré-
sulte de l'emploi immodéré des filigranes. — Notre gravure est
un peu plus grande que l'objet lui-même. 11 devenait difficile,
pour ne pas dire impossible, de rendre dans toute leur vérité
tous les nombreux ornements, tous les points brillants, les
fleurons variés décorant cette pièce d'oifévrcrie, qui ne saurait
être proposée, en résumé, comme un modèle à imiter.
