XV* SIÈCLE. _ école française. LETTRE INITIALE ORNÉE.
(A LA BIBLIOTHÈQUE DE L'UNION CENTRALE DES ARTS APPLIQUÉS A L'INDUSTRIE.)
Nous faisons remonter au commencement du XVe siècle cette magnifique lettre initiale et celle présentée dans la page suivante. — Elles sont l'une et l'autre copiées servilement sur un manuscrit ancien (un
psautier), appartenant à M. Guichard, président de l'Union centrale. — II est absolument superflu de faire remarquer le goût qui a présidé à l'exécution de ces deux initiales, dont le fond offre, quant à l'orne-
mentation , un souvenir de certains châles de Kachemire. - Nous nous bornerons à dire que l'enlumineur du XVe siècle avait la main sûre, et que nulle part sa plume ou son pinceau n'ont hésité dans le tracé
•les enroulements compliqués et des semis de coquilles qui couvrent littéralement cet 0 et ce T gigantesques. - Nos reproductions sont exécutées de la grandeur même des originaux.

This magnificent initial lellcr and Ihe one shown in the following page are, in our opinion, to
go back to the begmning of the XVth. century. Both are scrvilely copied from an old manuscript
(a psaller) which belongs to M. Guichard, the président of the Central Union. It is quite needlcss
to call attention to llic taste which presided over the exécution of the two Initiais, the giound of
which présents, as to the ornainentation, a kindied with certain Cashmerc shawls. We will confine
ourselves to sa.ving that the illuminator of the XVth. century had a steady hand, and that nowhcre
(lis pen or pencil hesitated along the complicatc rollings and the sparklings of shclls which literally
cover the gigantic 0 and T. Our reproductions have the very size of the originals.
