XVIe SIECLE. — orfèvrerie française. INSTRUMENTS DU CULTE.
(époque de henri iii.) un des flambeaux de l'Ai tel du saint-esprit
(AU MUSÉE DU LOUVRE, A PARIS.)
Les deux flambeaux par-
faitement semblables, dont
nous montrons l'un d'eux,
ont appartenu au roi
Henri III qui les a donnés
a l'autelde l'ordre du Saint-
Esprit. — Ils sont en cri-
stal de roche et les moulures
on arpent doré. Ils accom-
pagnaient sur l'autel un
très remarquable calice
que nous montrerons aussi
à un moment donné. Le
travail de ces objets est du
même temps et vraisem-
blablement de la même
main et les pendeloques
de perles fineset de grenats
qui ornent les flambeaux et
se retrouvent sur le calice
sont assez caractéristiques
pour éloigner tonte espèce
de doute à ce sujet.
Le monarnuo français,
on les donnant, à l'autel du
Saint-Esprit, a fait appli-
quer sur le pied une petite
nlaqne portant ses armes
qui sont, comme on le sait,
mi-parties de France et de
Pologne-Litbuanie.
Il faut signaler dans
ces riches flambeaux d'a-
bord les pendeloques dont
nous avons déjà parlé et
qui se retrouvent sur le
plateau du pied à la base
du fût et sous la bobèche,
puis les trois griffes sur
lesquelles pose le pied,
serrées autour d'une boule
de cristal; des pierres pré-
cieuses sont serties à plu-
sieurs places de cet objet
d'un caractère et d'un décor
tout particuliers, dus en
grande partie sans doute à
l'emploi du cristal comme
matière première.

Tho two candlesticks
quite alike, we show onc
of which, bave belonged to
the king Henry tho Third
who lias given them to the
altar of theorder of the
Holy Ghost. They are in
rock-crystal and the moul-
dings in golden silver.
They matched on the altar
a very remarkable chalicc
that we shall show also
in a givn time. The work-
manshi|i of those objects
is of tho same time and
probably of the same hand
and the pendants of real
pearls and of garnet which
adorn tlie candlesticks and
are found again on the
clialice are so characteris-
tic as to remove ail doubts.
The french inonareb, in
giving them to the altar
of Holy Ghost, bas affi.xed
on the foot a little plate
bearing his anus, which
are, as it is known, half
France and half Poland-
Lithuania.
It is necessary to point
out, in those sumptuous
candlesticks, at once the
pendants about which we
bave spoken already and
which are found again upon
the plate of the foot to the
base of the shaf and under
the sconce, and also the
threc claws clasped around
a crystal hall, upon which
tlie foot is placed ; jewels
àre set in several places of
that object presenting a
character and a décoration
very singular, produced
espccially by tho use of
the crystal as a raw ma-
terial.
