XIe SIÈCLE. — école française. . CHAPITEAUX DE L'EGLISE DU PRIEURÉ DE SOUVIGNY.

L'église d'où ces curieux chapiteaux sont tirés fut construite sous la direction de moines béné-
dictins venus de Cluny : elle se rattache, par son ornementation puissante et très caraciéristique, à
l'é:ole d'Autun, qui a laissé dans toute la haute Bourgogne, et même ailleurs, de nombreux édifices
où se reconnaît sans efforts l'influence de l'architecture antique. La fig. 456G serait au besoin une
preuve de ce que nous avançons. Les chapiteaux du prieuré de Souvigny sont lous sculptés dans du
grès, matière qui n'enlève rien, loin de là, à leur ampleur décorative et à leur vigoureux caractère.

The church frum which are borrowed ihese curious capitals was built by Bénédictine mouks
who came from Cluny Abbey. The building, by its powcrful and most characteristic oinamcnta-
t': r, belongs to the Autun school which in upper Burgundy as elsewhere bas crected many monu-
ments which betray, at first sight, the influence of Roman Architecture. Fig 4Ô66 illustrâtes
specially the opinion we express The capitals of the Souvigny Priory are sculptured granité,
a material which does not diminish, far from it, their ample::ess and powcrful character.
