Il y a fort longtemps
que nous avions en porte-
feuille le dessin de cette
admirable toile peinte que
possédait autrefois feu
Brion, le peintre regretté
dont le talent était appré-
cié de tous. Notre graveur
a parfaitement rendu, et
avec la plus grande finesse,
les ornements et les per-
sonnages qui ont trouvé
place dans ce magnifique
décor. La végétation, les
animaux, les oiseaux sont
partout visibles malgré leur
échelle restreinte. Disons
sans hésiter que, sur cette
œuvre d'art indien, ce sont
les ornements et la végé-
tation qui doivent être pré-
férés à tous les points de
vue. Les deux grands per-
sonnages du milieu sont
un peu étranges et d'un
dessin qui laisse à dési-
rer. Leurs membres, entre
antres choses, sont em-
preints d'une raideur re-
grettable et à laquelle on
n'est guère habitué. Les
têtes, par exemple, sont
remarquables d'expression
et l'une et l'autre d'un
beau caractère. La scène
inférieure, disposée dans
une arcature, est remar-
quable a plus d'un titre;
mais il faudra certaine-
ment la regarder à l'aide
d'une loupe si l'on veut en
pénétrer tout le détail et
tout le charme.

We have executed a long
time ago the drawing of
this admirable painted tis-
tue which belonged to late
Brion, the painter so re-
gretted and appreciated by
ail. Our engraving repro-
duces to perfection and
with great niceness the or-
naments and figures which
constitute this splendid
décoration. The plants,
animais and birds are per-
fectly visible notwithstand-
ing their minuteness. Vie
mu8t unhesitatingly aflirm
that in this Indian work
of art, the plants and ani-
mais are to bs preferred
at ail points of view. The
two grand personnages of
the central part are some-
what étrange, and the
drawing leaves to wish for ;
their limbs, prosent a stiff-
ness much to be deplored
and to which we are far
from leing used to : the
heads, on the contrary, are
remarkable for their ex-
pression and are both full
of ebaracter. The scène,
at the base, which displays
itself under arcades, is re-
markable at many points
of view, but it must bc
studied wilh a magnifying
glass to appreciate ail ils
détails and charm.
