The gilt wood brac-
kets Of this kind which
exist are very nume-
rous ; the art collectors
have preserved many
perfect spécimens of
the very best décora-
tive style : the royal
résidences , private
mansions and hôtels
having supplied large
quantities which need-
ed only a slight re-
gilding to show them-
selves in ail their primi-
tive brillancy. They ail
belong to the epochs of
Louis XIV»1, of theRe-
gency and Louis XVtb,
and ail dénote the
marvellous skill of the
sculptors of the lime
as well as an unde-
niable good taste and
a nicety of exécution
which is impossible to
surpass. We need not
remark how, in this
bracket, the solid parts
are cleverly combined
with the often repeated
voids. Our drawing
gives a perspective
view of M. Bougle's
bracket, which enables
one to judge at flrst
sight the use it was
intended for : the open-
work indicates that it
was hung against a

Les consoles en bois doré de cette époque sont arrivées en
grand nombre jusqu'à nous. Les collectionneurs ont su nous
en conserver d'intactes et du plus beau style décoratif. Les
demeures royales, les châteaux particuliers, les hôtels en ont
fourni, qu'un pou de dorure a suffi à rendre neuves et éclatantes.
Elles remontent toutes aux époques de Louis XIV, delà Régence

et de Louis XV, et toutes décèlent le talent merveilleux des
sculpteurs de ces époques; toutes sont d'un bon goût indéniable
et d'une finesse d'exécution qu'il est impossible de dépasser.
On remarquera, dans l'objet ci-dessus, combien les pleins sont
heureusement combinés avec les vides, et l'importance de ces
derniers, multipliés à l'infini. Notre dessin montre la console de

M. Bouglé en perspective, et on voit de suite à l'examen du dessin
la destination de l'objet. Les formes ajourées indiquent un objet
appliqué sur le lambris et la forme circulaire et saillante
démontre le support d'un vase quelconque ou d'un buste. Il nous
souvient d'avoir vu de fort riches consoles dans les apparte-
ments de Jacques II, au vieux château de Saint-Germain
