XVIe SIÈCLE. — école espagnole. HEURTOIR EN BRONZE,
(a moitié de l'exécution.) a la cathédrale de tolède.

On voit ce curieux heurtoir à la porte qui conduit au cloître
de la cathédrale de Tolède. Il est plus étrange que beau; et la
présence de sirènes nues, maintenues par les extrémités infé-
rieures, est au moins étrange.
Le riche décor couvrant le bois de la porte est partout ajouré,
et appliqué et cloué sur le chêne. L'effet en est imposant, autant
par sa perfection que par son abondance : on n'en voit ici qu'un
faible fragment

This curious bronze knocker belongs to the door leading to
the cloister of Toledo Gathedral. It is far more strange than
fine, such are at least the two naked mermaids hanging head
downwards. The rich ornamentation which covers the whole
door is openworked through outand nailed upon the oak frame.
The effect produced is grand, both as regards the perfection
of the exécution as well as the profuseness : we show but a
mere fragment of the ornamentation.
