far better and distin-
guishes itself by an ele-
gancy and by a delicacy of
kable. One of the ftnestspe-
cimens of the kind is the

above. It represents an an-
gel standing under a richly
ornamented arcade, hold-
ing a long sceptre in his
left hand, and support-
ing a globe surmounted
by a cross, in his right
hand ; the half extendcd
wings arc worked with ut-
most care : he is clothed
in a long tunic over which
is thrown a cloak, the
folds of the drapery are
very élégant and full of
taste. The face, surrounded
by thick heavy locks, is
perfectly regular and the
large open eyes give it an
expression full of life. The
figure is noble and impos-
ing, but without ar.y stiff-
ness. It would bc difiicult
to dream of a finer type of
angel, and we may unhe-
sitalingïy recominend itas
a model.

Les ivoires byzantins ne possèdent pas toujours une valeur
artistique hors ligue, et si quelques-uns de ces objets offrent
le caractère de portraits fidèles, l'exécution en est parfois lourde
et en général assez maladroite. L'ivoirerie religieuse est souvent
d'un meilleur style et se distingue par des qualités d'élégance
et une délicatesse de travail qui sont vraiment remarquables.
Une des plus belles choses que l'on puisse citer en ce genre est
a moitié du diptyque que nous montrons aujourd'hui et qui
présente un ange debout, sous une arcade richement décorée.
Quelques degrés le séparent du sol ; d'un main il s'appuie sur
un long sceptre, de l'autre il tient un globe surmonté d'une
croix. Les ailes, largement déployées, sont travaillées avec le
plus grand soin. Le costume, composé d'une tunique et d'un
manteau, offre des draperies d'un goût excellent et d'une rare
élégance. Ajoutons que la tête, encadrée par une chevelure aux
boucles épaisses, présente un type d'une parfaite régularité.
Les yeux, grands ouverts, donnent à la figure une expression
vivante; l'attitude est noble, imposante, mais sans raideur.
On ne saurait, en un mot, rêver un plus beau type d'ange que
celui-ci, et on peut hardiment le présenter comme un modèle
à suivre.
