Terra di Sienna, like other earths, is denomi-
nated from the place where it is native. It is of a warm
brown colour, pretty much ufed in landfcape in oil, for
roads, buildings, &c, as well burnt as unburnt.
Price raw 4d. per oz. bladders 6d. burnt 6d. per oz.
bladders 6d. each.
Terra verte, is found in the earth, not in ftrata,
but in large lumps. It is fine, regular, and fmooth ;
whan icraped, and the finer parts feparated, it is ready to
be ground in oil for ufe, makes the beft ftanding colour
of any fimple green ; but is a tender colour.
Price in bladders 3d. each.
An earth is dug up in Mendippe Hills, which is very
clofely allied to terra, verte, why Ihould it not be ex-
amined and tried ?
Troy white is a native chalk found near Orleans
in France, which is finely powdered, wafhed, and tem-
pered for ufe.
Artificial troy white, called alfo Spanifh white,
is chalk wafhed repeatedly, and its finer particles united
to alum-water, frequently ftirred, then filtred, and dried,
ufed fometimes in water-colours.
TURPENTINE, oil or fpirit of turpentine, is ufed
as a drier to the clearer colours, and to fit fome co-
lours for ufe in fpirits of wine ; to clean pencils with
from their colours, &c.
Price 6d. or 8d. per pint.
Colours ground in fpirits of turpentine, after being
thoroughly dry, may be ufed either in oil or water.
TURMERIC root, is in form not unlike ginger;
as it grows old, it becomes brown. To extract a yellow
tincture from it:
