Verditer is obtained by adding chalk to a folution
of copper in aqua-fortis. It is prepared by the refiners
of filver, which metal is thought to afiift the copper.
Some fay pearl-afhes would produce a blue fuperior to
chalk. When good, it is a cool, full blue, but muft not
be greatly trufted for durability, either in oil or water-.

VERDIGRIS is a kind of ruft of copper, i. e. copper
corroded by vegetable fermentation into a bluifh-green
fubftance. Generally it is obtained by corroding plates
of copper by vinous acids. The chryftals of verdigris
diftilled, make a very good blue-green tincture, which
mixes well with yellow for a green, or if diffolved
in the juice of rue, makes a green at once : with a de-
coction of logwood it ftrikes a black, which diluted, is a
fine blue. Price of diftilled verdigris per oz. 6d. or 8d.
VERMILION, natural, is found in fome filver
mines as a fand : This requires good grinding.
Vermilion is a mercurial production ; made of arti-
ficial cinnabar, ground up with white- wine, and whites
of eggs repeatedly ; the more it is ground, the finer
and paler it becomes.
Price from 8d. to 2s. 6d. per ounce.
ULTRAMARINE is procured from the lapis lazuli,
by a tedious procefs of calcination, grinding, &c. It is
the firft and prince of blues, warm, rich and noble, but
very dear. Price from three to ten guineas per ounce.

Ultramarine-ashes are of a fnnilar nature. Price
