To the EDITOR of the ARTlST's REPOSITORY.
S I R,

ICongratulated myfelf and the Public on the
appearance of your Work; that at length a Per-
formance was offered to them, whofe plan, fo far as
I could difcover, was intended to unite entertain-
ment and inftru£tion: long has it been deilred by
all who value the excellence of good manners, and
at the fame time poffefs a talte for the Arts, that an
happy union might take place between them. I will
not flatter you, Sir, or even praife you any further
than to fay, that I think you judicioufly avoid that
drynefs which is too often the character! ft ic of mere
books of inftruction; and by rendering your precepts
pleafing, I doubt not but you meet with public ap-
probation.

Some of the following thoughts have laid by me
now feveral years, being originally intended for ano-
ther purpofe; but wiming to contribute my mite to
your affiftance, I have transcribed and inferted them
in this letter.

I have often wondered what Satisfaction could arife
from thofe very reprehenfible performances which
are Selected by fome gentlemen as ornaments to their
apartments, or decorations to their cabinets; efpe-
cially when their poffeffors are not ignorant how ftre-
nuoufly they have been condemned by the wife and
