H 2 - Street of II. (and III.); the pari east of <i has been excavated about 11 feet lower
than the part to the west ; it is of Periode II. and III. ; the part to the west of
n has not been excavated below the level of III. It is probable that at both
perioda the east part was about G feet lower than the west part and that there
were steps at about the point u.
18 The west wall has doubtful traees of a very thin tinishing eoat of lime-plaster over
the rough earthy plaster. This is very fragile and cannot last long.

apparently a Step. Perhaps the level of the ground outside was raised after the
building of the house and it hecame necessary to form a atep down into the
house (fig. 3(i).
