NOTE.

I wish to acknowledge the assistance I have reeeived in the illustrations to this paper.
The Town Wall in the Squares A 5 to K 5 was surveyed by Mr. C. R. R. Clark in 1897. I have
incorporated bis exeellent plan in the two accompanyingplates, only verifying some details and
distinguishing the dillerent periods. The eontinuation of the Town Wall from Square P 5 to
square L 5 and the north-western part of the site about as far as the middle of (i 2, G 3 were
aecurately plotted by Mr. E, 15. Hoare in 1S98 His plans were extreinely useful to me, but as
soir.e further excavation was made in 181)9 and as it was neeessary to verify all the details
espeeially in separating the dillerent periods, 1 deeided to survey nearly the whole of this part
afresh.

The general seetions LM and NO are by Mr. Clark; the otheis are by myself All the
other plans and drawings are by myself. The Views are from photographs by Mr. Hogarth.
