In the last cover is an erasure of four lines, and a column of
verse extracts, some headed “ Marcialis codes ” (= Martial),
others “ Pinnas,” including a single line headed :
Sigillum Walteri Map. Munera si vitas, transcendes
archile vitas.

[Walter Map was Canon of Hereford, and on the death
of William de Vere (Dec. 1198) was elected bishop by
his fellow-canons ; but the election was set aside by
the king.]
