The illumination of p. 1 is Italian. A Dominican friar in the
initial. At bottom, medallions of a man and a lady, and
between them one of a sheld : (qu. on a chevron or ?) 3
fleurs de lis az. Not very good work.
The rest of the ornament seems to be French.
At end of volume :—
Liber ecclesie Cath. Hereford : and (in another hand)
Ex dono Magistri Johannis Bayly.
[John Bayley was Canon and Precentor of Hereford,
1463-1479.]
Collation :-l10—1910, 20s (8 blank) || 2112, 2210 236 (6 blank,
save for scribbled verses).
Contents :—
I. Fratris Jacobi, nomine Jannensis, de ordine
predicatorum—Legenda sanctorum.
Inc. (prol.) Diversum tempus presentis vite in quatuor
distinguitur.
Expl. ut tandem in eo habitare dignetur per gloriam.
II. Vita sancti Thome Archiepiscopi martiris
Cantuariensis.
This anonymous life is not in Canon Robertson’s
“ Materials ” (Rolls Series), nor does it resemble
any of the lives there given.
Inc. Igitur beatus Thomas martir natus est ex legitimo
matrimonio et honestis parentibus.
Expl. In ejus interfectores interim ulcio divina deseviit:
ut alii digitos dentibus frustratim discerpentes,
alii fame defluentes, alii paralisi dissoluti, alii
amentes et effeti miserabiliter interirent.

Late binding. A very varying number of lines to the page, in
several different hands—cursive writing, with many con-
tractions : carelessly written, with no ornament or rubrica-
