[P.z. ii.

(22) Anselm : Cur Deus homo.
(P.L. 158. 359.) fol. 135.
Inc. Opus subditum propter quosdam.
(23) Explanaeio Clementis Lantoniensis prioris super
alas cherubin et seraphin. fol. 158.
Die. Prima ala est confessio.
Expl. Iloc est ex tota voluntate, ex tota racione, et ex
toto intellectu amare.
Probably a Cathedral book.

P.l. ii. Vellum : 9x7: ff. 134 : Cent, viii-ix.
Later binding. 33 lines to the page. Well written, but with
no ornament save the coloured titles to each gospel. (That
to St. Luke is missing.) These (full-page) ornaments are
of a runic character, similar to the initial letters in the
Durham Gospels and the Book of Kells. Schenkl thinks the
script is Irish. Lindsay thinks the orthography suggests
“ a Welsh scribe rather than an Irish ” : he has a long note
on this MSS. in St. Andrews Univ. Publ. No. X, pp. 41-43,
with a full list of the abbreviations, etc.
On fly-leaf at end :
Liber ecclesie Herefordensis precii Ils.
At the end of the volume are two documents in Anglo-Saxon,
the first regarding a lawsuit brought against his mother by
one Eadivine. He lost his suit, and she left her property
to a kinswoman, Leoflsed, wife of Thurkill the White, who
was her surety. This record is printed in full by Kemble,
Cod. Dipl. IV, 54. The other deed is of a purchase of land
by Leofwine. The last line is :
Aet Sc’e ^Ethelberthtes mynstre and se’e gudlaces—
the only instance existing of the two names being thus
connected.
