Hereford orells in some other Christian buriall where my
executors or administrators shall think most conveniente. . . .
Item, I will that my executors shall deliver and distribute to
churches within the countie of Hereford all suche church
apparell as I had within this countie if any remaine in my
house. . . . Item To the Cathedrall Church of Hereford to
be set in their library all my written works of Divinitee.”
On the same leaf, and in the same hand-writing, are four
Welsh words, with their English equivalents, written probably
when he was editing Yn y Ihyvyr liwnn, the first printed
Welsh book, published in 1546. If so, they would have
been written some years earlier than the Gildas note. Sir
John Prise was on terms of friendship with William Herbert,
Earl of Pembroke, who was probably related to the Walter
Herbert, who once owned this book.]
“ The inscription Hine libellum exccpi must mean that there
was in the volume a copy of Gildas, which Prise took out
and sent to London for collation. I do not identify it with
any known MS. of Gildas.” M.R.J.
Bound in at the end of the volume is a leaf from a Gospel,
not glossed, but written very large for use in services. It
contains part of St. Luke xvi, 19-31 . . . cotidie splendide
. . . prophetas non audiunt. . . .
