THE NILE.

37

Our crew had a soiree in the evening, and enter-
tained us with deafening music and dancing; the
latter, which consists only of placing the hody in
awkward attitudes, hending backwards, and balancing
upon bent knees, is as ungraceful as possible; and we
were thankful when they were pleased to desist from
the noisy darabooka (drum), clapping of hands, coffee
and pipes, with which they amused themselves till ten
o'clock: we sailed on an hour afterwards, determining
to allow no more balls in our dahabieh. The moun-
tains became more varied in form as they changed into
the sandstones of Jebel Silsilis, and the cliff on which
Kooni Ombos stands so finely; but darkness came upon
us, and we saw no more till we reached Assouan at
10 p. m. on the 26th of January, forty-two days after
leaving Alexandria.
