ABD-EL-KADEK.

small suite of rooms in the Mosque of the Moghrebins,
a very holy place, and, one day when the British Consul
was paying a visit to the Pacha of Jerusalem, Abd-el-
Kader was announced : the Pacha went to the door to
meet him, and bowed down to the ground before him ;
he stayed but a very few minutes, and the Pacha ac-
companied him to the threshold, and there again pro-
strating himself to the very floor, he kissed the hem of
his garment, which Abd-el-Kader did not withdraw,
but, lifting up his hand, he stood there and addressed
the Pacha in a sort of speech or sermon : " I call upon
you, oh Pacha! to remember what a responsible and
important position you occupy; never forget how great
is your duty, and how immense an account will one day
be required of you for all the power bestowed upon you ;
fail not in any particular of your manifold duties; re-
member to give alms to the poor, to do justice to the
widow, and to succour the oppressed," — and much
more, the Pacha standing the whole time humbly before
him, with folded hands and downcast eyes, in the atti-
tude of a slave. Considering; the high rank of the
Pacha of Jerusalem, this scene was a very curious one.
