a formal message that morning to the camp, saying
that they did hope we would soon " move on," for that
we had eaten nearly every cock, old and young, in the
town, and they could not supply us with any more!
We were, indeed, aware we had eaten the old cocks, but
were all unconscious of having ever tasted a young one.
So we had to make the best of our departure, and to
believe it was time to leave : we were all feeling ill and
languid, from the heat, our overtaxed strength, the
sulphur, and the carrion; and the camels were evidently
getting weak from want of proper food. A centipede
had emerged from under the pillow of one of the gen-
tlemen the night before, and a deadly serpent been
killed in the mash'lah of one of the dragomans on the
same day. The precious sketches were packed up, we
made our last notes by starlight, filled the saddle-bags,
took a farewell bathe in the sulphur stream, and lay
down for our last sleep in the air of the warm sulphur-
scented stream.
