existence of this convent is to be found in the document issued by Polish Provincial Jan of
Brzeg of 11 May 1375.4 Shortly afterwards, on 28 January 1378, by a bulla issued by Pope
Gregory XI, it was in turn incorporated into the Ruthenian contrata of the Societas fratrum
perigrinantium propter Christum inter genets (“Association of Brothers Peregrinating for
Christ to the Lands of the Infidels”), to which it belonged until 1456.5 In 1612, the Kamia-
nets convent which up until then had belonged to the Polish province, was transferred to
the Ruthenian province. Within its jurisdiction a Podolian contrata was instituted, and the
prior of the Kamianets convent was to be its vicar.6
The majority of authors agree that the original church and convent buildings were made
from wood. However, there are two principally contradictory opinions regarding the date
of the construction of the stone church. According to the traditional view, the wooden
Dominican complex was destroyed in the fire which broke out in 1420 and after this cala-
mity the monks constructed - in all likelihood with their own funds - a stone church,
whose bulk has been preserved until the present day. Some authors are of the opinion that
a stone convent was also raised here at that time.7 The financing of these works became
possible thanks to a considerable increase of the convent’s wealth which in May 1401
received the village of Zubrówka from Świdrygiello, Duke of Podolia.8
