It was a great honour for the National Museum in Cracow to organise an Interna-
tional Conference of the ICOM Costume Committee and to host the most distin-
guished experts in this area.

The carefully selected subject of the conference and the rich offer of accompanying
events helped the participants enhance their knowledge of Poland, Polish history,
monuments and museum collections.

We take pride in knowing that the guests to the Conference found the National
Museum's collections of costume, textiles and accessories rich and highly versatile.
We are happy that other Cracow museums (among them the Wawel Royal Castle,
the Cathedral Museum, the Ethnographic Museum and the Museum of Photogra-
phy) as well as the Wawel Cathedral and the Słowacki Theatre joined in by pre-
paring interesting programmes and presenting the best objects in their holding.

The variety of topics discussed during the conference was truły impressing. To our
enormous satisfaction a fair number of conference papers were devoted to Polish
historical apparel and Polish themes in generał.

I hope that this publication of Conference papers will contribute to improving and
widening the expertise of costume specialists and enthusiasts, and that it will be
received well by all.
