ENGRAVED DESIGNS OF WILLIAM BLAKE

he owns and which was formerly in the possession of Sir William
Richmond, R.A., has the watermark 1828.

[2-7]. Engravings made for Richard Gough’s Sepulchral Monuments in
Great Britain. This work was not published till 1786 (Part I) and
1796 (Part II), but many of the drawings and engravings made for it
were done years before. Blake was much occupied during his ap-
prenticeship to Basire (1771-1778) in making drawings in West-
minster Abbey and in London churches for the “ Sepulchral Monu-
ments.” J. T. Smith records that Stothard specially praised his
drawing of the head of Queen Philippa. Blake’s share in the en-
gravings cannot be determined with certainty, as only his master’s
name appears on those commissioned from Basire. But it is probable
that the “ Philippa ” and other heads in a similar style were engraved
as well as drawn by Blake. Dr. Keynes, indeed, thinks this may be
accepted with certainty. Blake doubtless had a share also in engraving
some of the plates of tombs. Gough's appreciative allusion in his
preface to Basire's “ modest prices ” might be explained by the fact
that nearly all the work was done by the young apprentice. All the
prints are signed, below, Basire del. dc sc. or del. et sc.
