Third State : For the Sexes substituted for For the Children. The
flying figure remains, but a corresponding one is added, left;
beneath these are two groups of floating forms, and beneath
them two confronted angels. Instead of date and imprint
are the lines:
Mutual Forgiveness of each Vice,
Such are the Gates of Paradise
Against the Accuser’s chief desire
Who walkd among the Stones of Fire
Jehovah’s fingers Wrote the Law
Then Wept! then rose in Zeal and Awe
And in the midst of Sinai’s heat
Hid it beneath his Mercy Seat.
O Christians, Christians, tell me why
You rear it on your Altars high.
Both by Russell and Keynes this state is wrongly described
as a new plate.
Fourth State : The arc of a sun with springing rays is added
between the two angels. The 7th and 8th lines of verse are
changed to
And the dead corpse from Sinai’s heat
Buried beneath his Mercy Seat.
The 5th line reads,
Jehovah’s Finger wrote the Law.
20. Plate I. “ I FOUND HIM BENEATH A TrEE.”
A woman gathering a child out of the earth under a tree; she
holds another child in her dress. Below is the title and imprint.
