Rescue Excavation at the Maidan of the Fortified Settlement (Grodzisko)
in Milewszczyzna, Korycin Commune
Archaeological excavation at the Milewszczyzna fortified settlement, Kory-
cin Commune (AZP 31-86/4) was carried out in 2017. This was the next stage of the
previous archaeological work performed in 2014. Tire research was connected to the
culture park being organised in Milewszczyzna. The fortified settlement lies on a
tip-shaped elevation cutting into the marshy valley of the River Kumiałka, a tribu-
tary of the River Brzozówka (fig. 1), which had been a trade route connecting North
and South sińce prehistorie times.
The 2017 archaeological excavation brought about the discovery of 33 fea-
tures (fig. 3-6, 13-14) and 99 movable historical artefacts (fig. 7, 8). Rit features in-
clude contemporary and Early Modern pits, alongside Early Medieval structural
pits that are the remains of the settlement's structures near the embankments (fig. 6).
The rare ceramic fragments mean that the fortification was used as a refuge. 420
pieces of cremated bones and a ceramic fragment come from a destroyed Trzciniec
culture burial ground. The fortified settlement was erected most likely between the
10* to mid-ll* century. By comparing the location of defensive features in the ar-
chaeological digs versus the hypsometric map of the site (fig. 2, 9) and by using a
digital topographic model (fig. 10), it was possible to provisionally determine the
fortified settlemenfs defence system. The study revealed two moats and proba-
bly three embankments (fig. 11). The inner embankment encircled the oval area of
the maidan, 20-25 metres in diameter. The diameter of the outer embankment was
about 85-90 metres at its base. There are no traces of another moat outside it.
