The Orreskii were the same people as the Satrse, who
inhabited the mountains to the northward and eastward of
the Edoni; they were one of the tribes who worked the
silver mines of Pangeeum.

Philippi, anciently called Krenidse, was enlarged by
Philip of Macedon, and named after him. In the neigh-
bourhood were rich gold mines, which in the time of
Philip are said to have yielded 1,000 talents a year, or
more than three millions of pounds.

Archelaos, the grandson of Alexander 1., began to reign
B.o. 418. The goat's head on the reverse, may refer to the
legend of Karanos, the founder of the Argive dynasty in
Macedon, who was led to Edessa by a dock of goats, in
consequence of which he made it his seat of government,
and changed its name to Aegse.
