fastened over his left shoulder, who rests his right hand on
a bearded Satyr of rather lower stature, turned towards
him. Next comes a group of three : a bearded Satyr with
a panther's skin twisted round his left arm, standing
between two Maenads, with his right arm raised; a
panther crouches at his feet. On either side of this
Satyr is a Mainad, clad in a transparent garment which
leaves the right breast bare: they dance in contrasted
attitudes ; the one on the right hand brandishes a knife,
the Maenad on the left the hind-quarters of a kid, in allu-
sion to the death of Pentheus. Next comes a youthful
male figure, his left hand resting on the shoulders of a
Mamad turned towards him, who is clad in loose flow-
ing garments. In his right hand the male figure holds an
inverted torch. The type is rather that of Dionysos than
of a Satyr, but this is a matter difficult to decide on, as the
face has been restored and the form of the ears is not dis-
tinctly made out. The last group in the composition, and
which is almost entirely modern, consists of a Satyr bran-
dishing a thyrsus in his right hand, and wearing a panther's
skin knotted on his left shoulder, and a Maenad, whom he
approaches, raising his left hand. She looks towards
him, and wears a talaric chiton, over which falls a diplo'idion
as low as the hips. Below this frieze the vase is encircled
by winged female figures, whose bodies terminate below
in marine arabesques, and who hold out a patera in
each hand. The ornaments of the mouth and handles
have been imitated from a vase in bronze or other
metal. Eestorations : all the Maenad in the group last
described except her feet, and all the Satyr next to her
except his right leg, left foot, left arm, and part of the
panther's skin ; the face of the figure holding the torch ;
the left arm and head of Pan, all but the beard, and the
greater part of the amphora which he holds.
