VASES ON TABLE CASE N.

No. L Krater. The sacrifice of Tphigeneia. In the
centre of the scene is an altar, on the right of which stands
Iphigeneia, behind -whom, and nearly concealed by her
figure, is the hind substituted as a victim through the
intervention of Artemis; behind the altar stands the
ministering priest, Kalchas, holding out tlie sacrificial
knife. Above this group, on the left, is Apollo, seated, and
on the extreme right, Artemis, armed with a bow and two
spears. The treatment of the subject on this vase differs
materially from the mural painting found at Pompeii, in
which Agamemnon is introduced with his head veiled, as
in the picture by Timanthes described by Pliny, and the
hind is seen in the air above the altar. Rev. A scene

the dead. These four figures are on different levels, to
indicate the irregular character of the hillside which

Satyr and Maenad in relief, painted in several colours.
