Monatsbericht, 1867, p. 762. Notwithstanding the
unusual spectavit, the genuineness of this tessera is main-
tained by Htibner (Ephemeris Epigraphica, iii. p. 163),
and his opinion is confirmed by the evidence of another
tessera recently found at Tarquinii (Corneto), which fur-
nishes a fourth instance of spectavit. He cites Mommsen's
conjectural explanation, that a gladiator, when rude donatus,
may have been allowed to pass from the arena to the cavea
of the circus, that is, from being spectatus to spectavit. U.
