this composition is an indented border composed of triangles,
'hatched with diagonals, alternate with plain triangles.
The apex of the shell is carved in the form of a mask, the
hair over the forehead indicated by incised lines at right
angles to each other, so as to represent clustered burls.
This shell was found at Canino, in Etruria. See Bnllett. d.
Inst. Arch. Roni. 1841, p. 134 ; 1843, p. 59 ; 1848, p. 59.
Length, 8^ in. by 5^ in.
No. 6. Fragment of similar shell, ornamented on both
sides; on the inside is part of the indented border with
lotus above, and perhaps part of winged Sphinx. A shell
of this kind was found at Bethlehem, and is exhibited in
the Second Egyptian Room, Table Case C. Fragments of
two more shells of the same class were found in the
excavations at Nimrud, and are exhibited in the Assy-
rian Gallery, Table Case 62. The Trhlacna squamosa is a
species peculiar to the Bed Sea and Indian Ocean, and it
was probably through Fhcenician trade that the ornamented
specimens of the shells here noticed found their way to
Greek and Etruscan towns.
CARVINGS IN IVORY AND BONE,
TABLE CASE G.
No. 1. Naked female figure; the arms close to the

is Archaic ; the head too large in proportion to the body ;
the left knee and right arm are wanting, and the right
side has traces of fire. The back of the head is worked
quite flat. Height, 2-/^- in. Found in a shaft communi-
cating with galleries cut under the Akropolis at Kameiros.
No. 2. Another similar figure cut off below the knees.
Over the forehead is a double row of raised zigzag lines, a
long tress, rudely represented, hangs down on each side ;
the eyebrows are raised in relief, and unite with the line of
the nose; the eyeballs are pierced with round holes; the
arms are parallel with the sides; the head too wide. Bone ;
pierced between the knees; the top of the head cut off
square, and pierced with two holes in a vertical direction ;
the right arm broken off. Height, 2T\r in.
