slab which represented Athene showing Perseus the re-
flection of the Gorgon's head in her shield while he cuts

in Bullett. Arch. Nap. i. p. 188, pi. v. fig. 19.

(Cases 37, 38). Two groups, each representing an Ari-

WALL CASES 42, 43.

EOMAN TEEEACOTTA FIGURES.

In Cases 42, 43, are several terracotta figures, remark-
able for their size; these, with one exception, were found
in a well near the Porta Latina, Eome, in 1765.

(1) A draped female figure, thought to be the Muse
Urania. Several figures of the Muses were discovered in
the same place with this figure. Height, 3 ft. 11 in.
M. T. pi. xxi. No. 38.

(2) A draped female figure, probably the Muse Kalliope.
Her left arm rests on a pile of writing tablets. This
figure wants the head. Height, 3 ft. 5 in. M. T.
pi. xxii. No. 40.

(3) A draped female figure, the head crowned with ivy,
probably the Muse Thalia. Height, 2 ft. 2£ in. M. T.
pi. xxxviii. No. 76.
