following the outline of the pelvis. The hair is painted
red ; the figure is well modelled. Height, 5^ in.

(7, 8) Two female figures cut off at the waist, wearing
a sleeved chiton looped up under the girdle, over which
falls a diploidion. The drapery is very similar to that of
the Athenian Kanephoros in the Elgin Eoom.

In this collection are two (9, 10) specimens of malo
dolls, jointed at the arms and hips; a band covers the
lower part of the abdomen and pubes, tapering as it passes
round the back.

TOYS.

Small grotesque figures in terracotta are often found in
the tombs of children, and were doubtless their favourite
toys in life.

The following (Nos. 11-18) were found in tombs at
Tanagra :—

(11) Male figure riding on a swan. He wears a Phry-
gian cap painted red, a tight-fitting jerkin painted blue,
.and red leggings reaching above the knees; his arms are
painted red from above the elbow. The colours on this
terracotta are remarkable for freshness. Height, 4| in.

(12) Naked boy, painted red, riding on a white horse.
Height, 3|L in.

(13) Naked boy, painted red, riding on a white horse ; he
wears a spreading hat, petasos, painted white and encircled
with a narrow red border. Height, 4^ in.

(14) Male figure riding sideways on three panniers
strapped on a mule. Height, 4^ in.

(15) Ape seated, bearing on his left shoulder an oval
object painted white, with patches of red. The ape is
painted red ; a band of darker red encircles his waist; on
his head is a patch of white. Height, 3^ in.

(16) Ape-headed figure on a mule, flinging his arms and
legs about wildly. Height, 4|- in.

(17) Dog painted white, with a red collar. Height, 2f in.

(18) Goat painted white, picked out with black and
red ; the horns red, tipped with black. Height, 3-f in.

The following (Nos. 19-25) are from tombs at Athens :—

(19) Mule carrying a large dish with a spout, such as
were used in temples for sacred purposes. In this dish is a
round object like a small cheese, a cluster of clove-shaped
fruits on a stem, an object like a boot, and a flat tablet
