TABLE CASE K—continued.
MASKS.
A series of masks from tombs at Kameiros representing
a female head veiled. In most of these masks the hair is
arranged over the forehead in three rows of rippling
waves, above which is a stephane; over the back of the
head is a veil falling on each side of the neck. In some
of the masks a band separates the stephane from the hair
over the forehead. In the ears are disk-shaped earrings;
the base of the neck is cut off square. All these masks
have probably been painted, as traces of colour remain
on several. On one of the largest (32), which is 11^ in.
in height, the stephane is ornamented with rays painted
red, the hair black. The veil appears to have been black,
with a broad red border down the sides. One very similar
is published, Salzmann, Necropole de Camiros.
(33) The veil is saffron-coloured, with dark stripes on
the edge ; on the neck, which is painted white, are four
red lines, from each of which hangs a blue bulla. The
earrings of this mask are painted red. Height, 5^ in.
(34) The veil, stephane, lips, and hair have been painted
red, the earrings blue; the band below the stephane white,
with parallel rows of black spots. Height, 9^ in.
(35) The rays on the stephane are painted red, and the
hair seems to have been represented by wavy red lines
painted on the band below, and not in relief. Height, 9£ in.
(36) The stephane has been ornamented with red rays;
at the lower edge of the band the hair is painted in red on
the forehead; the lips have the natural colour; the ear-
rings have a pattern picked out with red; on the neck,
which is painted white, is a necklace of blue beads between
two necklaces of red beads. In all these masks the eyes
are long and narrow; the corners of the mouth incline
slightly upwards, causing too deep a depression in the
cheeks; the hollow in the middle of the chin is strongly
marked. Height, 5 in.
Nos. 37-39 are transition specimens, through which the
gradual improvement in art may be traced. (37) The
largest of all the masks found at Kameiros ; the front of
the figure is continued to the waist, and the breasts are
part n. f
