ASIA MINOR.

FROM YORTAN (A l-A 67).

The pottery from Yortan belonged to the collection of its excavator, Paul
Gaudin. Most of the other vases from the cemetery are in Constantinople and
Paris (Louvre) ; there are examples at Berlin (Museum fiir Volkerkunde),
Brussels (Musee du Cinquantenaire), Florence (Museo Archeologico) and Oxford
(Ashmolean Museum).

A 1. JAR. Ht. 3 in. Excavated in a cemetery at Yortan in Mysia, by P. Gaudin in Plate I.

1899-1901. Bought 1921.

Oval shape with slightly flattened base and upright lip. Heavy handmade
ware ; black polish was attempted, but the colour is mostly darjv grey firing to
brown and red, and the surface is uneven and broken by stony particles.

A 2. JUG. Ht.3l.in. From Yortan, as last. Plate I.

Body as last, but with lip slightly turned out to make a spout; heavy round
loop handle rising from lip to shoulder. Hard grey clay, pared and polished to
unusually brilliant black lustre.

A 3. JUG. Ht. 4^ in. From Yortan, as A 1, etc. Handle and part of lip restored.

Globular body slightly ridged around the middle, wide cylindrical neck cut
away obliquely from front to back, slightly flattened base. The handle was a
flat loop arched from lowest point of lip to middle of body. Light brown clay
with remains of bright red wash on surface.

A 4. JUG. Ht. 7x in. From Yortan, as A 1. etc. Handle broken away.

Shape as last, but larger, and body not ridged. Fine dark grey ware with
brownish patches and remains of polish.

A 5. JUG. Ht. 4i in. Excavated at Yortan by P. Gaudin, as A 1, etc. Acquired in 1904 by Plate I.

exchange with the Musee du Cinquantenaire, Brussels.

Shape as last, but with taller neck swelling in front, and slightly flattened
base. Stony black clay fired on one side to grey and brown, with remains of
polish.
