A '8. BOWL with upright handle. Ht. 5! in. From Chauchitza. Put together from Plate III.

fragments.

Globular shape with wide mouth, low upright lip and flat base. The
handle consists of a stout cylindrical thumb-piece, with flat top now chipped
away, standing upright on the lip, and a round loop joining the base of this to
the widest part of the body. Dark brown clay with hard, slightly polished
surface ; roughly modelled, but thin ware.

[Such bowls have been found in graves ot the Early Iron Age at Chauchitza (S. Casson,
J922). For other material from this cemetery see B.S.A., xxiv, p. 1. The handle is an Italian
Bronze Age type of Neolithic origin : T. E. Peet, Stone and Bronze Ages in Italy, p. 160.]

JAR. Ht. 61 in. Put together from fragments. Plate III.

Oval body with pointed base and turned-out lip. Dark brown clay fired to
rcd and black. Heavy ware, unevenly modelled.

JUG. Ht. 8f in. PIAte III.

Deep oval body with flat base, wide mouth with upright lip, round loop
handle, and three long bosses set vertically on the shoulder. The lip is broken
away over the front boss, but it is unlikely that there was a spout in this place.
Very coarse dark red clay fired black in places ; rough, heavy modelling.

JUG. Ht. 3! in. From a mound at Lembet, Salonika. The lip is broken away on one Plate III.
s'de. B.S.A., xxiii, pi. Ill, 8.

Oval body curving inwards to narrow mouth ; flat base, flat loop handle.
There is no trace of a spout. Dark grey clay evenly fired ; the surface is hard
and smooth, but contains large pieces of stone.

JUG. Ht. 2J in. The handle is broken away. As B.C.H., I.e. ii, pi. IV, 4.

Flat globular body with wide cylindrical neck and flat base.
The handle was a flat loop joining lip and shoulder. Dark grey
clay with remains of black polished surface ; a careful but primitive
bncchero, (Fig. 25.) f;s.2S = as2.

JUG. Ht. 2! in. All the lip and part of neck and handle are broken away. ' Plate III.

Shape as last but with wider mouth ; fabric similar but rougher, or less well
preserved.

[The last three pieces, A 81-A 83, closely resemble A 115 from Thessaly.]

CUP with handle. Ht. 3j in. The rim is broken away. Plate III.

Globular body with flat base and round loop handle. Dark brown clay,
black in fracture ; very coarse ware.

CUP with handle. Ht. i\ in. Put together from fragments. The upper part of the Plate III.
handle and one side missing.

Shape almost cylindrical, slightly hollow sides recurving to a broad flat
