A 218. FRAGM IS NT with scraped patterns. L. 2j in. From Tsangli. As Prehistoric
Thessaly, fig. 55 ft, p. 102 (r 1 a 2). Brilliant black polished ware. At the lip is a dull
band crossed obliquely by a group of burnished lines. Another group, slanting in the opposite
direction, followed at a short interval. The upper edge is chipped and uneven, and was
apparently not the original lip of the vase. (Fig. 39.)
A 219. FRAGMENT of rippled ware. L. 3} in. From Tsangli. As Prehistoric Thessaly,
fig. 55 in (r 1 a 3). Hollow upright side, sharp curve to base. .Black polished ware,
moulded above the shoulder in close horizontal ribs or ripples. (Fig. 39.)
A 220i-io. FRAGMENTS of incised ware. L. 3J in. to ij in. From Tsangli. As Prehistoric
Thessaly, fig. 56 (r 2). Rough ware with polished surface, light brown to dark grey. The
designs, which are open, and often arranged vertically, are formed of plain lines and rows of
dots or dashes irregularly drawn. Nos. 1 and 2 have bands of dots between straight lines ; in
the latter the bands are curved, and appear on both sides. No. 3, the leg of a vase, has a
herring-bone line and zig-zags. No. 7, of very fine polished grey fabric, has accurately drawn
angular figures. (Fig. 39.)
A 221i-l2. FRAGMENTS of crusted ware. L. 3} in. to 11 in. From Rakhmani. As Prehistoric
Thessaly, pis. IY-VI (in colours), p. 32 (r 1 y). Roughly made ware, but usually thin ; greyish
brown or black clay with burnished surface and decoration in thick pink paint which is not
fixed, but is soft and friable. The patterns are mostly broad bands of colour ; only no. 1, a
flat base, has a spiral coil inside. On no. 2, part of a heavy vase, the pigment is also plastered
over the handle. Most of these pieces are from the rims of open bowls, with deep borders of
colour on each side (3-10) ; no. 9 has a narrow sunk band filled with pink, no. 10, and perhaps
no. 11, show traces also of white paint. On 11 and 12 the pink colour has a red tone.
A 222l-2. FRAGMENTS of crusted ware. L. i\ in., 3 in. From Zerelia. Rough black ware
with slight remains of red paint on outside (1) or inside (2). No. 2 has a long triangular boss
set vertically on the side.
THIRD AND FOURTH PERIODS (BRONZE AGE) (A 223-A 257).
A 223 56. Unpainted sherds of various shapes and fabrics belonging to the Third
and Fourth Periods. Plastic ornament occurs, especially in rope patterns on
large jars, and handles are often elaborately modelled, but the only colour
decoration is the red and black shading of a ferruginous surface.

A 223l-2. FRAGMENTS of red and black ware. L. 3} in., y} in. From Sesklo. No. 1 is of
open, curved shape, from a hemispherical bowl or dish. Fine brown clay, covered on both
sides with a thick lustrous slip which is fired in red and black patches, like Cretan ' Vasiliki
ware,' A 424, etc. On the outside a large piece of this slip has flaked away. No. 2, of coarse
ware, has polished red surface with dark discoloration which is probably accidental.
A 224i-7 FRAGMENTS, red and black. L. 4 in. to i-J in. From Rakhmani. Black and red
mottled ware, as before ; 1-3 of the same shape and technique as last, with coloured slip.
No. 2 is of paler tone, fired brown and red. Nos. 4-6, which belong to the earliest' period, are
burnished, and do not show any slip or wash. No. 7, of rougher fabric, has a boss below a
turned-out rim.
