PREHISTORIC AEGEAN POTTERY.

a single string-boss pinched out and vertically
pierced. The body is engraved with a series of
vertical leaf-shaped figures, which are pointed at
the tips, and overlap each other at the base like the
petals of a flower. Each petal is divided vertically
in halves which are striped with" lines parallel to the
curved edge. Round the base of the neck four
plain lines. (Fig. 59.)

[It has been noticed that the incised design on this
vase is an imitation of Egyptian lily-petal decoration : Hall,
op. cit. A similar bottle but with the usual hatched patterns
was found with Early Minoan pottery in the ossuary cave at
Pyrgos in Crete : Xanthoudides in '&px- AeAr., 1918; p. 136 ;
Evans, Palace 0/ Minos, i, fig. 19, c.~\

correspond with the string-holes on the body. Very coarse
black clay with brown surface. The sides of the box are
divided by incised lines into vertical bands, which are filled
with oblique hatching in alternate directions. (Fig. 60.)

A 312. BOX. Ht. 3! in., diam. 6i in. From Antiparos, as A 303, etc. The lid is missing.

Shape as last. Coarse brown clay with a finer surface of the same colour.
The decoration is evenly incised in narrow horizontal bands, alternately one
plain and two filled with lines slanting in opposite directions.

A 313. BOX. Ht. 3 in., diam. 5 in. From Antiparos, as

A 301. Lid Wanting.
