and pointed globular body ; the base is simply flattened, and
the handle is a thin round loop attached below the neck.
The whole of the exterior including the base, and the inside
of the lip, are covered with lustrous black varnish. Four
pairs of moulded vertical ribs are set at equal intervals on
the body, one pair beneath the handle being much shorter
than the other three ; and within the handle four horizontal
grooves are incised under the wash. (Fig. 69.)
[The dark lustre is not a burnished pigment as in A 317, but a thin
wash ; on the band inside the lip brush-marks are visible, as in the
Early Helladic varnished ware A 263, etc. The heavy fabric, tensile
form and plastic decoration of this jug are all characteristic of
Melian pottery. See A 346-7 and note.]

A ring of seven tall cups or bottles connected with one another by ties
and resting on a hollow cylindrical stand with splayed foot ; the top of the
stand is cut away between the cups so that each has a separate support. Within
the ring, its mouth lower than those of the surrounding cups, is a deep globular
bowl, supported by a tie from each cup. Reddish clay with thin white slip, and
painted geometric ornament in dull brown-black varnish. The outer sides of
the cups are painted with a close lattice-pattern, the lips of these and of the
central bowl are ringed inside with a broad band, and the stand, with the round
base of each cup, has thin horizontal bands closely set.

Tall oval shape with wide mouth and small flat base.
Below the lip is a wide flange, as if for a lid, which forms
the upper surface of four horizontal string-tubes. Half-
way down the body on each side is a horizontal ridge-
handle, scored on its upper surface with deep crossing
lines (Fig. 70). Light reddish-brown clay with smooth
surface but no polish.
