A 576. CUP with handle. Ht. 4} in., diam. 3= in. From Knossos, as A 571. Plate

Yellow clay covered with a dark red wash. Shape almost cylindrical, with
mouth turned outwards and flat base ; the handle is a thick flat loop roughly
smeared on to the body, its upper end overlapping the lip. The wheel-marks on
the walls are spiral.

Shape as last, but not so deep ; blacked surface,
over which are designs in white : three plain bands
round the lower part and irregular dots above, imitating
mottled stone, as in A 514, etc. Flat loop handle ;
thin but roughly-turned fabric. (Fig. 119.)

Shape as A 572. Fine reddish clay, covered
with a wash originally black, but now bright red in
colour. On upper part are remains of a band of
spirals in white, with thin bands below. . (Fig. 120.)

Shape and decoration as last, with a band of closely-wound spiral coils
below the lip, two narrow lines below these, and a single line at base.

The straight-sided shape with flat base, as before ; decoration a band of
curled sprays in white on a black ground, with a thin band at base and lip, a pair
of thin bands below the spiral scrolls, on the level of base of handle, and a
broader white band between this and the base. Very good fabric, fine thin ware
with brilliant purplish black varnish. There is a narrow round moulding at
the base.

A 581. CUP with foot. Ht. 33 in., diam. 3i in. From Zakro, as last.

Shape as A 466. Reddish clay, covered on surface with a dark red wash,
except inside the foot ; round the upper part of the vase is a broad band in thin
white paint. Rough, heavy fabric, but wheel-made : there are spiral ridges inside.

A 582. CUP with handle. Ht. 2 in., diam. 3 in. From Palaikastro.

Shape as A 514, but without the sharp angles and round curves. Reddish
clay, with red wash round the rim inside and out, and on top of handle. Heavy,
rough fabric.
