A 745. CHEST with LID. Ht. 22 in..; 1. 28I- in.; w. 16I in. Ht. of lid, 6 in. From

Deep oblong box standing on four short legs. On each of the long sides
are two sunk panels ; on the short sides, one ; and at the top of each panel on the
long sides is a round loop
handle, set vertically. Each
panel has a narrow ridged
moulding on the top edge.
The clay is red, covered
with a soft yellow slip on
which are painted patterns,
but the surface is much
perished, and the designs
are hardly visible. On
one long side both panels
are filled with diagonal
crosses ; in (a) the limbs are
leaf-shaped with bordering
lines, in (b) they are triple
lines and the angles are filled
with concentric curves. The
other panels had apparently
similar designs. There are
remains of dark varnish also on the framework round the panels. In each
corner of the rim is a small hole which communicates with the interior of the
chest; in the floor is a row of four holes about J in. in diameter. At the top of
one end is an incised cross, corresponding to another on the lip when set in
the proper position.
The lid is in the shape of a low hipped roof with ridge-pole projecting at the
ends ; on the sides are sunk triangular panels corresponding to the oblong panels
of the chest. The framework is black ; in two panels are remains of an
irregularly looped line. (Fig. 169.)

Shape as last, with taller lid. On each side is a sunk panel ; those of the
long sides have a round loop handle set vertically in each of the top corners.
The lid is hollow ; each of the four sides slopes steeply to form a high hipped
roof, on top of which is a flat ridge projecting over the short sides. On the edge
of the lid are four handles, corresponding to those on the body, but set
horizontally. • Pale yellow clay ; round the rim inside is a thin band of black
