a Ripa in Rome, in the year 167414.

The group of Pluto and Prozerpina was the fourth sculpture of Bernini's early period renre-
senting a mythological theme. The f irst was the group of the Goat Amalthea with the Young Zeus
and Satyr done in the year 1615; the second one, in 1618 — Aeneas and Anehises, and the
third one — Neptune and Triton in 162015. After the Pluto and Prozerpina group two more
sculptures of the same character were executed — Apollo and Daphne, and as the last one —
the statuę of David in 1623ls.

The above mentioned works of Bernini were inspired not only by ancient literary sources
but t-!so by ancient sculpture of which he had a direct experience being the keeper in the Palazzo
